World Water Day 2008

It was decided in March to assist a community in The Gambia to obtain a water supply to the village and to raise £250 for a well to be dug. Sadly, due to the dropping of the level of the water table and to the demand for well diggers the cost has gone up from £250 to £750.The amount agreed (£250)was enough to fund the installation of a stand pipe and tap in another village & it was decided to fund this project instead of the well.

In March Cathy Grove was in The Gambia and was present to witness the successful installation of the pipe & tap. Water is now collected and taken to the home within minutes and washing is no longer taken to the river but can be done at the tap. Time & energy have been saved and water safety has improved.

SI Cardiff & District held a Pimm’s and Pool Party on Sunday 15 June at President Enid’s home when 30 people supported the event.

The morning weather was disappointing with rain at about mid day but the weather was kind during the afternoon. Only one brave young lady actually went into the pool, the rest of us took afternoon tea on the veranda chatting and enjoying the beautiful scenery.

We had a jolly afternoon and enjoyed sandwiches & cakes donated by club members. Cathy put together a display and delivered an interesting talk about the project and the difference that has been made to the lives of the women of the village.

The sum of £400 was raised (£250 for the tap and the extra will be donated to Water Aid.)
