Events – March 2007

On 14th March at Churchill's hotel, members were asked to bring a bottle of water to mark World Water Day. Following a talk by member Dr Kay Richmond, a quiz was held. There are hundreds of different types of water available for sale in shops as well as access to water by simply turning on the tap! By contrast, thousands in the world have to walk for miles to obtain water. This task, which in places can take 5 hours a day, is usually undertaken by women. At the end of the evening, the water bottles were raffled and £50 was sent to Water Aid.

On 23rd March at the home of member Maureen Ash, over £400 was raised at a pleasant and sociable Cheese and Wine evening. The money raised will go towards the expenses needed for member Anne Dunne's year as regional president which starts in November 2007. The Soroptimist International of Cardiff and District consider it an honour that one of its members will hold this office, only the third member of the club to hold such a prestigious position. The last member to do so was Pat Kernick who recently received a certificate from the current regional president Ann Hodgson. Pat has been a soroptimist for 50 years

Baroness Finlay of Llandaff was the guest speaker at President Jacquie's annual lunch. Following a superb lunch at the Holland House Hotel, Baroness Finlay spoke of her broad based work in the House of Lords. She was instrumental in introducing the No Smoking bills which led to the smoking ban in public places recently introduced in Wales.
